WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?

Occupational therapy is the art and science of the use of everyday activities to assist clients to engage in occupations.

  • Occupations” are those life areas that all of us are engaged in every day. For children, their primary life areas or “occupations” are that of play and leisure, school, rest and sleep, activities of daily living (e.g. self-care activities) and social interaction.

  • The paediatric occupational therapist assists children who experience difficulties in any of these life areas (occupations) where they live, learn and play.

  • The occupational therapy process entails specific, comprehensive assessment of function and areas of difficulty, the development of a client-centred intervention plan (including referral to relevant other professions), and the implementation of individualised, scientifically designed occupational therapy which is both therapeutic and enjoyable to the child.

WHEN IS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY NECESSARY?

Parents know their child the best! Trust your instincts – if you have a feeling that something is wrong, even if you cannot lay a finger on exactly what it is, seek help. The following three questions may assist you in determining whether you should consider taking your child to an occupational therapist:

Does the problem get in your child's way?

Touch to flip over

Contact our experienced occupational therapists at Sensory Roots for an in depth evaluation of your child’s situation.

Does the problem get in other people's way?

Touch to flip over

Some problems may not seem to bother your child but may bother someone else – it may be you, your child’s teacher or any other significant person in your child’s life.

Should you listen when a teacher, doctor or friend suggest you seek help?

Touch to flip over

Yes, if they have dealt with many children and can objectively recognize problems with a child’s functioning.
